Stoffels Alternanthera reineckii (Cardinalis)
Grown in a coconut fibre mini-pot to plug and grow in the tank. Packed in a breathable blister packaging to go. Lobelia cardinalis grows wild in Northern America. In the nursery this plant is cultivated in marshy conditions, forming dark-green leaves which are purple underneath. In aquariums the leaves turn a beautiful shade of light-green, with stems 10-30 cm tall and 5-10 cm wide. Widely used in Dutch aquariums in so-called “plant streets”. In open aquariums it grows above the water surface, where it forms very beautiful scarlet flowers and the leaves regain their colour. Can be used in garden ponds.

Alternanthera reineckii, commonly known as Parrot Leaf, is a striking aquarium plant valued for its vibrant red leaves. This stem plant, native to South America, features lanceolate leaves with a distinctive waviness along the edges. The upper leaf surface displays shades ranging from olive green to reddish-brown, while the underside varies from light brown to reddish-brown. Under optimal conditions, the plant can reach heights of up to 50 cm, making it suitable for mid to background placement in aquariums. Alternanthera reineckii thrives in the slow-flowing waters of the Amazon and adapts well to various habitats. Bright lighting, nutrient-rich substrates, and occasional CO₂ additions are beneficial for healthy growth. Regular fertilization with iron and micronutrients is also recommended. The plant flourishes in water temperatures between 23 and 30°C and a pH level of 6.2 to 7.1. Pruning encourages bushy growth. In Dutch aquascaping layouts, Alternanthera reineckii is often used to create vibrant contrasts with green plants and a dynamic underwater aesthetic.
